Frequently Asked Questions about the Prepaid Travel EMV Card

What is a Prepaid Travel EMV Card and authentication?

EMV, also known as Chip & PIN, is an international standard replacing the magnetic stripe on bank cards used for payment transactions. The card can be used with the magnetic stripe or the chip, ensuring that both US and non-US merchants will accept the card. Prepaid Travel EMV Card PIN transactions are more secure than those requiring a signature and protect you against fraud.

Is my Prepaid Travel EMV Card the same as a credit card?

No, your card is not a credit card with a line of credit, it is a pre-paid card. The only funds available on the card are those you have funded. You can make a split purchase to use the funds on the card if the merchant will support a split payment. Tell the merchant the amount available on the card and they will collect the balance from you by another means of payment.

Is my Prepaid Travel EMV Card like a debit card?

Yes and no. Like a debit card, you can use the card at participating merchants that accept debit MasterCard. Also, you can spend only the funds available. If the merchant allows, you can make a split purchase to use the funds on the card and pay the difference with another form of payment. However, unlike a debit card, a checking account is not linked to the card. The card only uses pre-paid funds.

Where can I use my Prepaid Travel EMV Card?

Your card can be used anywhere a merchant accepts debit MasterCard, including some internet and mail order purchases. You can use the card at terminals that read the magnetic stripe or read the chip embedded on the front. Presently, the chip terminals are predominately in international markets. However, some unattended kiosk terminals outside the U.S., such as luggage cart rentals, parking garages, even transit terminals, may decline your Prepaid Travel EMV Card.

How do I use my card at a chip terminal outside the U.S.?

The merchant will insert your card into the chip reader and you will be required to enter your PIN. This will authorize your transaction the same as using your PIN at a swipe terminal. Note that some unattended kiosk terminals outside the U.S., such as luggage cart rentals, parking garages, even transit terminals, may decline your Prepaid Travel EMV Card.

How do I add funds to my card?

Funds can be added to the card by visiting any Hills Bank location or via www.PpdTravelEMV.com. Select the menu option to transfer funds from one of your existing registered funding accounts. You may also visit a retail location nationwide to add funds via the Green Dot® Money Pak®.* Refer to the terms and conditions for applicable fees.

*Fees may be assessed by the retailer in addition to your card fees.

How do I fund my Prepaid Travel EMV account online?

*Fees may be assessed by the retailer in addition to your card fees.

What if my PIN is not working?

It is possible you have forgotten your PIN. If you receive the “Bad PIN” error, call 1-855-898-0087, and choose the option to "Hear PIN" to avoid blocking your PIN. Do not make more than 3 attempts if you receive a “Bad PIN” error. If you lock your PIN, it will lock the chip located on the front of your card, and you will no longer be able to use it at chip terminals outside of the U.S. Your PIN can only be changed at an international ATM that supports PIN unblock and PIN change functionality.

How do I change my PIN?

To maintain the security of your Prepaid Travel EMV Card, the PIN can only be changed at an ATM that supports PIN unblock and PIN change functionality. This is typically a function at ATMs outside of the U.S. where the Chip & PIN product is predominately utilized. The PIN originally assigned to the card will remain your assigned PIN unless you perform a change as described or receive a replacement card, which will come with a new PIN.

Can I use my Prepaid Travel EMV Card for a purchase that is larger than the balance on my card?

No, but you can utilize the remaining balance on your card towards a purchase and pay the difference with another form of payment. Always check the balance of your card before making a purchase and check with the merchant to make sure they can split the payment.

May I let someone use my card?

If you permit another person to have access to your card or card number, we will treat this as if you have authorized such use and you will be liable for all transactions and fees incurred by those persons. You are wholly responsible for the use of the card according to the terms and conditions. You may not request an additional card for another person.
