Privileged Status Program

Privileged Status is a surcharge-free ATM program within the SHAZAM® network. Customers of participating financial institutions can use the ATMs of other participating financial institutions without paying expensive surcharge fees.

The Privileged Status program significantly expands the number of surcharge-free ATM locations available to customers of participating financial institutions. Hills Bank and Trust Company is a member of the SHAZAM Network Privileged Status program. As a customer of Hills Bank, you will not pay a surcharge fee when using participating Privileged Status ATMs operated by other financial institutions. Likewise, customers of participating Privileged Status financial institutions will be allowed to use the ATMs at any Hills Bank office location without paying an ATM surcharge fee. Some of our off-premise ATM locations may also participate in the Privileged Status program. Cardholders simply need to look for ATMs that display the Privileged Status logo.

2. Will a Hills Bank customer pay a surcharge fee at ATMs operated by Hills Bank?
3. How will I know if an ATM operated by another bank imposes a surcharge fee?
4. How can Hills Bank customers avoid paying surcharge fees, or at least reduce the amount of money they spend on surcharge fees?

1. What is an ATM surcharge fee?
An ATM surcharge fee is a convenience fee imposed by the ATM operator and paid by cardholders who use ATMs to withdraw cash. The fee is paid at the time of the withdrawal. For example, assuming a $1.00 convenience fee, a cardholder's checking account will be charged $101.00 when withdrawing $100.00 cash.

2. Will a Hills Bank customer pay a surcharge fee at ATMs operated by Hills Bank?
No, Hills Bank customers will not pay a surcharge fee at any ATM owned or operated by Hills Bank.

3. How will I know if an ATM operated by another bank imposes a surcharge fee?
ATM operators must post or provide a "fee notice" in a prominent and conspicuous location on or at the ATM, notifying cardholders that a fee may be imposed for cash withdrawals and that fee amount. In addition, once a cardholder selects the cash withdrawal option, the ATM must display a surcharge fee notice and the fee amount on the ATM screen, and give the cardholder the option to cancel the transaction and avoid paying the surcharge fee.

4. How can Hills Bank customers avoid paying surcharge fees, or at least reduce the amount of money they spend on surcharge fees?

  • Use ATMs owned or operated by Hills Bank whenever possible
  • Seek out surcharge-free ATMs (i.e. Privileged Status ATMs) in the areas you live, work, or travel. ATM Online directories are available.
  • Withdraw larger amounts of money to reduce the number of times you use ATMs.
  • Ask for cash back when paying with your Hills Bank debit card at retail locations (i.e. supermarkets, drug stores, gas stations, etc.).
