Charitable Lead and Remainder Trusts

There are many ways to make gifts to charities—cash gifts, gifts of land or securities, and testamentary bequests are the most common. In some instances, however, the donor wishes to make a major charitable gift, but wishes either to retain the benefits of the donated property for themselves or family members for some period of time.

In other cases, donors want to pass current benefits to a charity but have the property come back to them or their family after a specified period. These “split interest” charitable gifts are subject to complex IRS rules, but, if handled correctly, allow the donor to take advantage of important income and estate tax benefits while at the same time accomplishing the donor’s charitable goals.

The Hills Bank Trust Department has the expertise and experience required to administer charitable lead and remainder trusts. We will work with you and your tax and legal advisors to create and administer a split interest charitable trust to maximize the tax benefits to you as you benefit your favorite charities.

Contact a Hills Bank Trust Officer today to make sure your gifts and wishes are carried out at the appointed time.
